PENTSOS Director Champions Entrepreneurship for Ex-Offenders’ Reintegration
The Director of Pentecost Social Services (PENTSOS), Pastor Benjamin Asare Yeboah, has underscored the importance of entrepreneurship as a viable pathway for the social and economic reintegration of ex-offenders, urging prison associates to leverage skills development and self-employment opportunities to rebuild their lives and contribute meaningfully to society.
He made these remarks at the maiden Prison Associates Conference (PRISACON), speaking on the theme, “A Fresh Start”. The presentation highlighted entrepreneurship as a pathway to reintegration, income generation, and sustainable livelihoods.
Participants were encouraged to look beyond the obstacles and numerous barriers that many ex-offenders encounter after their release, including social stigma, unemployment, and limited access to economic opportunities and focus on developing their capacities, acquiring marketable skills, and creating sustainable income-generating opportunities through entrepreneurship. “Entrepreneurship provides individuals with the opportunity to create value, build confidence, and regain economic independence,” he stated.
The engagement forms part of PENTSOS’ broader commitment to supporting rehabilitation, skills development, and economic empowerment among vulnerable populations, particularly persons in correctional facilities and those transitioning back into society.
Over the years, PENTSOS has implemented a number of interventions aimed at equipping inmates and ex-offenders with practical skills that enhance their employability and livelihood prospects. The organisation has established and equipped three prison-based skills training centres with fully furnished vocational training facilities, providing opportunities for inmates to acquire hands-on skills in trades such as carpentry, welding, fashion design, and other apprenticeship programmes.
To date, a total of 271 inmates have benefited from these training initiatives, strengthening their capacity for productive employment and self-reliance upon release.
In addition, PENTSOS collaborates with local artisans and vocational masters to facilitate community-based apprenticeship opportunities, creating pathways for skills acquisition, mentorship, and economic inclusion for vulnerable individuals.
The organisation believes that sustainable rehabilitation extends beyond incarceration and requires intentional investment in human capital development, livelihood support, and social reintegration. Through its interventions, PENTSOS continues to contribute to efforts aimed at reducing recidivism, restoring dignity, and promoting inclusive development.
Concluding his presentation, Pastor Asare Yeboah encouraged participants to remain focused on their personal transformation journeys and to view entrepreneurship not merely as a source of income, but as a means of rebuilding lives, restoring hope, and creating lasting value within their communities.
